The history of barnstone is an interesting one. This type of stone was necessary for the building of barn and home foundations, bridges, railroad trusses, and retaining walls.
Early settlers would quarry the stone from slopes, rivers and creeks. Each stone was hand honed using hammers, picks, and chisels to shape it for appropriate building needs. Workmen would haul the stone by horse and wagon to their location to create solid foundations to build upon. As new building materials were developed, such as brick and concrete block, the need for barnstone became obsolete. These stones will never be quarried in the same manner again.
As the urban sprawl moves out to the rural countryside and farmland, these old barns, bridges and other structures are being demolished. Our desire at Custom Landscaping Company is to incorporate a "piece of the past" into the landscapes of today. These stones are functional as well as naturally unique and can be used in all types of landscape applications.
